04 Nov

McKinley Mustangs,

Our character trait for the month of November is responsibility. Ms. Jaton’s class is hard at work, preparing to kick us off with an assembly on 11/07 about how to be responsible scholars this month. Please take a moment at the dinner table to discuss how your child can be responsible both at home and at school.

October was a busy month at McKinley! Our Mustangs had the chance to meet Ian Lendler, author of The Stratford Zoo Midnight Revue Presents Macbeth, who went through his thought process when writing a graphic novel. The PTA Jogathon was a huge success, raising over $4,000 for field trips and school events. Our Garden Club has been hard at work repairing garden beds and planting a winter cover crop. Our 6th graders attended Point Bonita Science Camp and our 4th graders had the chance to go to the Academy of Sciences. We celebrated Red Ribbon Week and thanks to our fabulous parent volunteers, staff, and students, McKinley won the top prize this year of $1,000. Not only that, it highlighted how we can all commit to living a healthy life. Under the supervision of Mr. Jackson, 100 Mustangs are participating in a lunchtime, flag football tournament. Next up is basketball and we will end the year with a soccer tournament. Our Aviation Club took flight this month and is meeting every Thursday at 3:00 PM in Room 21. We had a fabulous Halloween celebration on the 31st and the Giants won the World Series! Thank you to everyone who helped out with these events this month!

As we look forward to November, McKinley Parent-Teacher-Student conferences will take place from November 10th – November 21st. Our goal is 100% participation and we look forward to meeting with each and every family. Because of this, we will dismiss at 12:50 PM each day to give teachers the time they need to meet with each of you. Please note that students are an integral part of the Parent-Teacher-Student conference and should plan to attend. The focus of the conference is how your child is progressing and what we as a team can do to help increase your child’s academic achievement, while supporting his or her social-emotional well being. When students are a part of this process, there is an increased ownership over their learning. Thank you in advance for helping us build an even stronger home-school connection.

Starting on 11/04, on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM, our fabulous Spanish teacher, Maestra Jennie, will be hosting a Parent Intercambio in Room 6. The Intercambio is a great way to learn another language (half the class will be in English and half the class will be in Spanish), meet new friends in the McKinley community, and try new foods and be exposed to new cultural experiences. If you can attend on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM, I encourage you to join the experience!

Thanksgiving Break is November 24th – 28th and there is no school during this week.

Have a wonderful November,

Matthew Harris, Principal McKinley Elementary School
